Any unwanted, spontaneous pregnancy loss prior to the 20th week of pregnancy is considered a miscarriage. Miscarriages are a relatively common occurrence, affecting nearly 15% of all pregnancies. There are many possible causes of miscarriage, the most common is genetic abnormalities in the fetus. Unfortunately, there is nothing that can be done to prevent this type of miscarriages. Many women experience this type of miscarriage and go on to have a healthy, uneventful pregnancy. More than two miscarriages in a row are called recurrent miscarriages. As acupuncturists and Chinese medicine practitioners who support a lot of conceptions, we’ve found that there are some tips that may help prevent miscarriage:
1. Prepare for Conception.
Make an appointment with your gynaecologist 3 months before you start to try conception. She or he will review your medical history, ask about your lifestyle and perform relevant exams for you. If you’re taking medication, ask your ob-gyn first to make sure it’s safe for your pregnancy.
2. Take adequate rest.
Take adequate rest and avoid carrying or lifting heavy things through pregnancy, especially during the first trimester.
3. Don’t smoke.
Don’t smoke and stay away from secondhand smoke. Avoid drugs and alcohol. Limit caffeine which mean no more than two 6-ounce cups of coffee, tea or other caffeinated beverage a day.
4. Eat a well-balanced diet.
A well-balanced and healthy diet is the best way to get the vitamins and nutrients your body needs to nourish your baby. Plus, studies have found that eating a variety of fresh fruits and veggies every day can significantly lower your odds of having a miscarriage.
5. Take prenatal multivitamin.
Take prenatal multivitamin which include at least 400 mg of folic acid every day, beginning 3 months before conception, if possible.
6. Manage stress.
One study showed that women who felt happy, relaxed, and in control during pregnancy were 60 percent less likely to have a miscarriage.
7. Try acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine.
These two natural therapies can improve the ovarian function to help produce high-quality eggs as well as increase blood flow to the uterus and thicken uterine lining in order to support healthy embryo growth. Acupuncture is also a recognized method for managing stress and reducing anxiety.
