Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a complex endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age, which affects up to 20 per cent of Australian women. It is a leading cause of female infertility. PCOS can cause symptoms like infrequent or prolonged menstrual periods, excessive facial and body hair growth (hirsutism), weight gain, acne and so on. The signs and symptoms tend to vary from person to person.
There is no cure for this problem yet. Most doctors will put a woman with PCOS on the contraceptive pill (birth control pill). This will regulate menstrual cycles and reduce the acnes. But unfortunately it doesn’t treat the root cause of PCOS. What happens is that the pill tricks the body into thinking that it’s pregnant and suppresses ovulation. No egg is released from the ovary and pregnancy can’t occur. And when the woman discontinues the pill, the PCOS symptoms will most likely return.
In our clinic, we use Chinese Herbal Medicine and Acupuncture to help women suffering from PCOS balance hormone levels, decrease insulin resistance and lose weight in order to improve their ovulation and regulate their period.
